the time has come to discover the new frontier of outdoor food innovation.

We come to us and continue the Giro d’Italia in an outdoor key. Today we are in Molise, a region that is certainly small but with some paths that deserve to know the sole of your boots.

Mount Miglio

Mount Miglio belongs to the so-called “Massif of Molise” and is one of the typical places for those who love trekking in this area. There are various routes to reach the summit of the mountain, located at 1350 meters. Perhaps the most fascinating and varied is the itinerary that leads you from San Pietro Avellana to the summit through a 12-kilometer journey that consists of over 50% of forest tracks. This itinerary will also give you the opportunity to visit the Hermitage of Sant Amico and some Samnite fortifications.

An alternative is to start from Ortona and take a part of the Italy path. In this way you will be able to enjoy a splendid view of Lake Scanno

The hermitage of San Michele and Castel San Vincenzo

One of the most fascinating places in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise is the village of Castel San Vincenzo. The particularity of this place, inhabited by just 500 inhabitants, is given by the presence of the mirror of water and by the homonymous castle. On the banks of this reservoir you can have fun in the open air with various hiking trails (one of which will give you the opportunity to visit the splendid Cistercian Abbey) and for mountain bikes.

However, the best way to appreciate the beauty of the lake is to climb Mount San Michele via a path whose starting point is the Rifugio del falco in Pizzone. From here we proceed through the pristine and wild Mainarde Molisane finally reaching the hermitage of San Michele, located immediately below the cave of San Colombano.

The routes of transhumance

Transhumance means the migration of flocks or herds carried out by shepherds or cattlemen from the pastures located in the mountains or on the hills towards those in the plains. These movements are traditionally made through the natural paths of the sheep tracks, that is natural paths originating from the passage of animals. Some sheep tracks are still used by shepherds, others are now destined exclusively for mountain lovers.

We highlight in particular the so-called “Transhumance itinerary” that from Capracotta leads to Carovilli passing through the 5 Tratturi Regi and admiring a territory of our still uncontaminated peninsula.

It is a fascinating journey consisting of 3 stages of a total length of about 50 kilometers which will give you the opportunity to observe the characteristic features of the signs of the past and experience the taverns, churches and farms characteristic of the area and the phenomenon in first person of transhumance.

Along the way you can also visit the Apennine Flora Garden and the Museum of Rural Life.

The Pietrabbondante ring

In the province of Isernia there is a vast archaeological area located at about 1000 meters above sea level where the temple and the Italic theater of Pietrabbondante are located. These two remains of the II-I century BC occupy a slope a short distance from Mount Saraceno and are an excellent starter to be made before going along the Pietrabbondante ring, a route to take in about two hours and with a limited gradient on the tracks of ancient sheep tracks away from busy roads, ideal for enjoying Bivo in peace 🙂
