The best trekking routes of Friuli Venezia Giulia

After a few weeks of waiting, the well-known column returns to collect the most beautiful trekking routes of each Italian region. We are finally in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
For these places we have chosen an exceptional guide: Andrea di Ritorno alle Origini. Who better than him knows the mountains of Friuli Venezia Giulia? In his blog, highly appreciated by outdoor enthusiasts, he made a report of hundreds of releases, mainly in these areas. Among these we asked him to choose five that could best describe the mountains of his region of origin.
We waited for this selection for several weeks, it was not easy to choose 5 out of all those present in the blog … But here is the top five of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Exit 1 – Monte Floriz

We start with an easy stroll but that allows us to admire enchanting landscapes of the Friulian mountains. The departure is not far from the border with Austria, at the parking lot of the Tolazzi shelter at the Val di Bos plan at 1350 meters above sea level. From the hut, near which you can leave the car, take the CAI path 144 and then the CAI path 145. At the end of these two paths you reach the first peak, the Costone Stella (2200 meters above sea level). The beauty of the landscape that you will be able to appreciate really repays the effort faced to overcome this difference. Continuing on the Spinotti path we reach the Marinelli refuge where we suggest you take a break in the company of Mount Coglians (and maybe regenerating with a few sips of Bivo). From here, along the CAI 174 path you reach the top of Mount Floriz and then begin the descent along the CAI path 150 and passing through the Morareet hut (which in addition to the refreshment service also offers overnight accommodation).

Exit 2 – Ring of Lanza

Here is a beautiful 9-kilometer long ring with a positive drop of 400 meters, suitable for everyone. The point of departure and arrival is Cason di Lanza, in Paularo in the province of Udine. The route runs along the border with Austria in an environment rich in floral biodiversity, karstic outcrops and suggestive visuals.
From the parking area, starting point of our hike, take the CAI 451 path through a forest of spruces and larches that leads us to a flat stretch where we can cross two streams and admire Mount Zermula. Via trail 448 you reach Sella di Cordin immersed in an area characterized by shrub vegetation and then at the base of the Pale di San Lorenzo. During the route, slightly deviating, you can visit the cave of Attila, a classic karstic formation that develops for 400 meters. Tradition tells that Attila, king of the Huns, has hidden his treasure in this cave in 452 AD returning to Hungary after one of his terrible raids.

Exit 3 – the path of the Pellegrino

As Andrea writes in his blog “Back to the Origins”, you can not miss an excursion immersed in the snow. Andrea’s proposal is therefore to choose to follow the path of the Pilgrim to Mount Lussari during the winter season. The starting point of this tour is located at Camporosso Valcanale in the municipality of Tarvisio (UD) where the cable car station is located. From here we take the path CAI 613 during which, after a few kilometers, we will begin to meet the various points of the via crucis, which give the trail its name. Beyond the peculiarity of meeting these chapels completely immersed in nature, this excursion gives the opportunity to walk immersed in the Natural Park of Tarvisio Forest and, having reached the summit of Mount Lussari, admire the spectacle offered by Montasio and Jof Fuart.

Exit 4 – a ride to Polcenigo

Here is a simple ride simple to do in any season in the province of Pordenone (Andrea did it in December) that will allow you to appreciate the village of Polcenigo. We are in one of the first inhabited places in the region. In fact, in this area in Prehistory the first human settlements were registered thanks to its strategic position and natural resources.
The village allows you to appreciate the majesty of some historic buildings of the sixteenth and seventeenth century and the newly renovated huts, which in the past were an essential economic resource for the economy of the village. The castle of Polcenigo from above dominates the village.

Exit 5 – excursion to the bell tower of Val Montanaia

One of the symbols of the Friulian mountains is located in Val Montanaia in the middle of the Friulian Dolomites Park: the bell tower of Val Montanaia, the most beautiful in the world. The departure of this excursion is fixed at the Pordenone shelter, the arrival at the bivouac Perugini, Andrea’s aim is to bring a greeting to the “stone scream”. From the Pordenone hut, take the CAI 353 path which will allow us to overcome the first 100 meters of difference in height immersed in the forest until you see the peaks that surround this splendid valley. The surprise of the day arrives at an altitude of about 1600 m as soon as the point of the bell tower is visible in all its majesty. After about two hours walk you reach the bivouac Perugini from which you can admire the Val Montanaia in its entirety and the bell tower.
