Proveg, a modern incubator for sustainable companies

We have been honored to be invited to Berlin by Proveg International (https://proveg.com/), a large global organization that deals with spreading awareness about the importance of reducing the consumption of products of animal origin.

Yesterday was the world day of Veganism, and Proveg decided to open a modern incubator of innovative companies with sustainable ideas and products, all based on totally plant-based ingredients, just like Bivo.

Several times we at Bivo have talked about these issues, as they are the basis of our own project. Proveg invited us as representatives of the “Foodtech” companies in Italy, and we were very happy to participate.

The evening was very interesting, with interventions by important personalities of the so-called “Foodtech” sector, i.e. those innovative companies that deal with approaching the food sector with a new perspective, able to resolve the contradictions inherent in our current food model. One name above all is that of Marc Post, a Dutch university professor who is considered a guru in the field of in vitro meat development. Beyond the understandable and spontaneous reactions of distrust by consumers, the meat created in the laboratory could really represent one of the possible solutions to the enormous problems that our food model currently creates. And, if the market trend does not change, food consumption will continue to create even heavier problems in the future. For a vision of what Marc Post does, we invite you to see this short documentary, edited by The Economist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RU7ggZbOR6k

Let us remember once again: continuing to consume products of animal origin with the current rhythms, even without considering the inevitable increase in the world population that will be recorded in the coming years, will create irretrievable environmental problems, with disastrous effects on humans. The goal, really very challenging, but possible to achieve if we all manage to spread awareness on these issues, is to decrease by 50% the consumption of animal products in human diet by 2040. With the current trend, unfortunately, consumption rather than decrease is destined to increase dramatically, with apocalyptic consequences for the world and for all humanity.

We also repeat one thing that is not remembered often enough: numerous studies also show how the current food model is the first cause of climate change, having overcome even other factors such as fossil energy sources for its negative impact on the planet.

In addition to thanking Proveg and wishing them the greatest success in their rightful fight, we would like to give a strong “good luck” to the young European startups selected by the incubator.

From those who create delicious cheeses based entirely on vegetables, to those who develop innovative vegetable proteins, to those who have created crowdfounding platforms targeted only to sustainable innovative companies.

A special mention to our favorite product tasted, created by the guys of Serotonina, a Polish startup capable of producing totally vegetable-based cheese, which was really delicious (you should really try it). At the moment the production takes place in an artisan way, but Serotonina aims to enlarge the production on a much  bigger scale while maintaining the same quality of the product.
