The Sentiero Italia

The Sentiero Italia is a route over 7000 kilometers long that crosses the length and breadth of our entire peninsula. The route is divided into about 400 stages and begins in the town of Santa Teresa di Gallura in the province of Sassari, continues along the Apennine ridge of Sicily, goes up the peninsula and finally reaches Muggia, in the province of Trieste, touching 360 municipalities of the 20 regions and 6 Unesco natural sites.

Il Sentiero Italia was born in 1983 thanks to a group of mountain enthusiasts, who later met in the Sentiero Italia Association and the subsequent collaboration with the CAI. From here in 1995 and then in 1999 the entire route was entirely covered by some hikers who took 8 months to complete it. In 2018 the Sentiero Italia took the name of “Sentiero Italia CAI” and, thanks to the volunteers of the Italian Alpine Club, on the one hand, the collection of the information necessary for an enthusiast to complete the path began and on the other the realization of all the necessary interventions to guarantee the complete practicability of the path.

The goal of this project, well explained on the official website, is to “unite the whole of Italy in a big embrace, by walking through the extraordinary territories that our country is able to offer as soon as it leaves the paved road”. And in fact, by analyzing the map of the route, the intent was fully successful, also thanks to the use of some long stretches of itineraries that have existed in our area for many years. In fact, the Italian Path partly follows the Great Crossing of the Alps: an itinerary of about 1000 kilometers of 55 stages that unites the entire western Alpine arc. Some stages of the Italian Path, on the other hand, trace the 28 stages of the Great Apennine Excursion of 425 kilometers in length that covers the entire Apennines of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. From here, some people finally coincide with the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, a 440-kilometer hiking itinerary that develops along the watershed delimiting the Ligurian coast.

However, not everyone has 8 months available, in addition to training, to cover it from start to finish. In this case, the Italian Alpine Club, with which we at Bivo have had a partnership for several years, has come to the rescue of all its members and outdoor lovers in general. Precisely because for almost all the enthusiasts it is unthinkable to travel the Path Italy, at least continuously, on the official website of the Path it has inserted 4 sections in order to tell this extraordinary itinerary from 4 different points of view. The first column, edited by the same territorial sections of the Italian Alpine Club, tells about the “Sentiero dei Borghi”. The second column, on the other hand, tells the journey from the food and wine point of view “Il Sentiero dei Sapori”. The third column was created instead with the aim of telling the “Wonders of Italy”, that is, the natural glimpses that make our country unique in the world. A uniqueness also from a wildlife point of view, the protagonist of the fourth column “Le Orme sul Sentiero”.

Whether you decide to walk the Italian Path from start to finish or you plan to make only one of the 440 stops for your meals during the excursion we recommend Bivo, the food for outdoor enthusiasts ready in 30 seconds that you allows you to nourish and re-hydrate at the same time.
